Research foundation on the subject of physical symptoms and biopsychosocial (BPS) components have showed significant changes in measurable pain, disability, anxiety, depression, emotion, and health in subjective paper based outcomes and objective blood assessments of inflammation.

Dr. John performs and donates to the research of such a technique (NET) which helps reduce pain, chronic disability, anxiety, and depression, while improving health and well-being.

On March 26 2012, Life Wellness Centers of Colorado (formerly Life Chiropractic) will be hosting a Patient Appreciation Day. On this day Dr. John will be giving away FREE treatment. That is right, FREE TREATMENT. Due to the large volume of patients expected for this day, Dr. John will only be able to perform one adjustment or one clearing of an NEC. All new patients are welcome to come in this day but will not be able to receive treatment is an examination was not previously performed by Dr. John.

Because Dr. John is so passionate about NET and emotional stress causing physical health problems he will be raising money to support the ONE Research foundation on an upcoming study on CANCER! Please pass this email along to all your friends and family and encourage donations at Life Wellness Centers of Colorado on March 26th. This new study of Cancer patients being treated with NET will revolutionize healthcare today! The most recent studies have found significant changes in blood chemistry that Dan Monti MD wants to go after the largest health problem in the US, CANCER. We are aiming to reduce emotional stress in Cancer patients with the intent to monitor immune function effecting cancer. Our theory is that immune function will reduce and cancer survivor rates should improve. Please helps us by donating to this earth shattering research.

Contrary to popular opinion, not all stress is a negative thing. Human beings have natural built in mechanisms that help us to know how much effort to put out. These environmental cues are necessary to keep us safe in a world that can be difficult to navigate. Well-Managed stressors can be good motivation for us to keep reaching for our full potential. The problem occurs when either we are exposed to stressors that seem too great for us to manage, or if little stressors are allowed to build up because they were not fully processed the first time.

First, I want to talk about the benefits of a Traditional Chinese Medical (Acupuncture and Related Modalities) session from the Allopathic, or Western perspective. Gentle insertion of tiny acupuncture needles into specific areas of the body provides stimulation to the body that cause immediate changes in the brain. From what we can tell so far the emotional brain or limbic system is affected the most. With so many stimuli to process, when we have a problem in part of our bodies that can be ignored for the short term, our brain is likely to selectively throw a circuit breaker so that we are not even aware of the issue. We no longer notice the pain, inflammation, lack of range of motion, etc. Acupuncture can re-awaken a brain that has lost it’s awareness of the body it manages by freeing the flow of information and electricity.

Now I will speak from a more Traditional point of view. The concept that the Mind, Body, and Spirit are connected is a very important one in Chinese Medicine. All 12 Major Acupuncture Meridians connect internally with our organs, and have an emotional correspondence associated with them. For example:

5 ELEMENT EMOTIONAL ASPECTS OF THE ACUPUNCTURE MERIDIANS

1. Heart and Small Intestine (Fire): Joy or a Lack of Joy

2. Spleen and Stomach (Earth): Clear Thinking in Health; or Anxiety – Over-Thinking.

3. Lungs and Large Intestine (Metal): Letting Go While Keeping Enough for Ourselves.

4. Kidneys and Urinary Bladder (Water): Willpower. The Ability to See Things Through.

5. Liver and Gall Bladder (Wood): Planning, Clear Vision. Irritability and Frustration.

A trained Chinese Medical Practitioner can detect emotional blockages within the body. Our goal is to re-unite the body with the mind so that the flow of electricity, blood, lymph, and qi is harmonious in the body. The end result is a place of peace; a solid foundation for managing our stress. The positive changes that occur as a result of an acupuncture session can last a long time, and are cumulative in effect. I can honestly say that for myself, acupuncture is my favorite form of stress relief therapy. I myself receive acupuncture regularly so that I can be my very best. Thank You for reading.

How are you keeping up with your New Year Resolutions? Have you made goals for yourself? Are you able to implement changes into your life as the speed of the year re-engages?

Have no fear because we are here to take you through the step by step process of creating change in your habits in order to achieve the goals you set for yourself.

Having initiated last week the impact of sleep on health, we will continue for a few more weeks teaching you how to get proper sleep. If you have questions about stress and how this may impact your health, please call our office for a free consultation 303-678-1979. B-Vitamins and Minerals are essential nutrients in supporting your bodies ability to recover and rejuvenate cells. As we become more stressed (Physically, Nutritionally, Toxically, and Emotionally) our body does not recover and we begin to deplete these nutrients. Over time your system begins to struggle with the demands of the day and sleep patterns are disrupted. So make sure you support your active/over stimulated life with proper whole food B-Vitamins and Minerals. We recommend
Cataplex B from Standard Process and Body Balance from Life Force International.

How do you recognize poor sleep patterns?

Do you sleep and wake around the same time each day (including weekends)?

Naturally you want to schedule 7-9 hours for a restful night sleep. However, if you change the time you sleep or wake, the body can not align to a rhythm. Bio-energetic rhythms, or circadian rhythms, are built-in natural cycles your body operates within to maintain equilibrium. The main external cue for circadian rhythms is sunlight. When your circadian rhythm is disrupted the hormonal/endocrine system begins to unwind, then signs and symptoms appear all over your body, seemingly in a non-specific pattern. The endocrine system is very sensitive and altered sleep patterns can lead to Adrenal/cortisol imbalance, Thyroid Disorders, Estrogen Imbalances, Low Progesterone, and even Low Testosterone. These disorders look like low energy, inability to lose weight, trouble sleeping, headaches in the morning, lack of motivation, concentration problems and numerous other conditions. In our office we provide saliva panels and blood chemistry testing which allow us to track down the exact area of imbalance to help return your endocrine system back to normal. Once hormones are balanced your circadian rhythm should normalize allowing you better sleep.

Most recently there has been adds for medication to support “Swing Shift Disorder.” This is not a disorder which needs medication. If you wish to stay healthy, assist your body in its own natural rhythms with nutrition, herbs, homeopathic medicine, chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, and massage. The medication will further disrupt the hormone system leading to severe health problems!

SOLUTION:
A general rule to sleep is, sleep when the sun goes down and wake when the sun comes up. Naturally the winter has less sun, and therefore is it ok to sleep slightly longer during the winter months. Look at your consistent schedule and find times which work within the constraints you are met with. If you are a night owl, stay up a little later but allow yourself 7-9 hours. A morning person could get up at 5 am but must consider the 7-9 hours and go to sleep earlier in the night.

On all accounts you must consider activities performed before going to bed. Avoid high exertion activities before going to sleep. Discontinue back-lit electronics one hour before going to bed (computers, i-pads, TV). Use low level lighting, darken the room (including alarm clocks and chargers), and practice relaxation techniques once settled into your bed. Get regular exercise and eat right avoiding food at least one hour before sleep and stimulants like caffeine 4 hours before sleep.

Know when to seek help:
● Persistent daytime sleepiness or fatigue
● Loud snoring accompanied by pauses in breathing
● Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
● Waking with fatigue or a slow starter
● Frequent morning headaches
● Crawling sensations in your legs or arms at night
● Inability to move while falling asleep or waking up
● Physically acting out dreams during sleep
● Falling asleep at inappropriate times

Any of these symptoms are caused by stress to different areas of you body. Call today to schedule a free consultation to find out what stressors are causing YOUR sleep problems. 303-678-1979

Welcome to 2012, a year full of possibilities. As we turn into a new year and begin to review the year gone past we often reflect on the things we would like to change about ourselves. Many times these changes get lost in our day to day activities and a month two, even a whole year go by and we may not make significant alterations to our lives to incorporate what we want to change. Well I am here to walk you through health changes and begin to show you how to live a life to the max, while enjoying the smell of roses along the way.

We start the journey where each day begins and ends, sleep. All too often we make excuses for staying up late or snoozing until minutes before we need to leave the comfort of the bed for the bitter cold that awaits just outside our door.

My question to you; Are you satisfied with you current level of rest?

If the answer is no then please read on and find tips to supporting yourself in sleep. If the answer is yes, please read on and find out ways to maximize your sleep.

We all know that sleep should occur from 7-9 hours per night, with the nightly average coming around 7 1/2 hours. However this depends on how fast you may fall asleep, whether you sleep through the night, or activities done before going to sleep.

How fast do you fall asleep? If you sleep in seconds after laying down, chances are you are pushing your nervous system too far on a daily basis. When your nervous system is ramped up all day we refer to this a sympathetic overload. Too much visual stimulation (computers, tv, video games and the like), poor food choices (excitotoxic foods, sugar, grain overload, caffeine and the like), not enough exercise, poor communication in relationships, infections, and subluxations of the spine all contribute to sympathetic overload. If this imbalance continues for any period of time permanent damage can occur to the body and the mind.

The good news is that we can correct choices and behaviors to improve mind and body.

SOLUTION: Many people whom push their sympathetic system deplete their bodies mineral and B-Vitamin stores making them crash energetically or sleep in seconds after laying down. We recommend BODY BALANCE by Life Force International to support your bodies mineral needs, as each ounce of liquid contains over 120 minerals and aloe to support healing of the body. B-Vitamins often taken in high doses cause our urine to turn darker or even orange. This is usually a sign of synthetic vitamins or malabsorption. We address these problems by using whole food supplements from Standard Process, specifically Cataplex B. Cataplex B supports the bodies ability to metabolize proteins, fats, and carbohydrates which energize the body, red blood cells which carry oxygen and nutrients throughout the body and neurotransmitters which balance mood and stress.

Call today to make an appointment to relieve your sympathetic nervous system with a Chiropractic Adjustment, NET, or Nutritional Evaluation. 303-678-1979

Ask The Acupuncturist - What is Qi?
by Ryan Powell, LAc.

To many Americans, the concept of Qi (chi) is a confusing one. The idea that our planet’s living beings have a measurable electro-magnetic field nourishing them is a new one for many people. Most practitioners of Energetic Medicine describe Qi as “Vital Force.” This energy nourishes our tissues and our minds giving us consciousness and the ability to manifest our purpose. Western science has confirmed that the acupuncture points are more electrically active and are typically warmer than surrounding tissues. Qi flows in precise pathways on the body called “Meridians”.

But now I would like to make this concept a little easier to understand. I would like to talk about Qi as being the sum total of all of our metabolic processes. In other words, it is what results when we combine food, air, and that spark of life we call spirit. The fact that a person can stand up, move their bodies, digest their food, think, and communicate is evidence that the person has some Qi. In other words, it is not some magical, intangible force that cannot be seen by human beings. We have all experienced days when our Qi is not as full and healthy as it could be. When we are tired, undernourished, afraid, or simply working too hard, our Qi is weaker.

So how do we keep our Qi strong? The four paths to vibrant health are very important:
1. Structural Integrity (Chiropractic and Acupuncture)
2. Good Nutrition
3. Detoxification
4. Emotional Health

These concepts are very powerful since they provide a road map for people to follow every day of their lives. In general, in order to maintain good Qi a person should eat a well rounded diet of both cooked and uncooked foods, get sufficient calories, nutrients from fruits and vegetables, fats, complex carbohydrates, and of course protein. Some exercise is very important. There is a concept in Chinese Medicine that you must “Move the Qi to Build Qi.” Gentle, informed detoxification is also an ingredient for good Vital Energy. Finally, emotions have a very strong impact on the quality and quantity of Qi. Finding emotional balance through conscious awareness is key to staying well.

According to Traditional Chinese Medical Theory, Qi:
1. Warms the body
2. Defends the body from the elements, bacteria, and viruses
3. Transforms foods and fluids into building blocks for our bodies
4. Nourishes the body with transformed food, replenishing our essence daily.

*For more information on Traditional Medical Theory I suggest the Book “The Web That Has No Weaver” by Ted Kaptchuk, O.M.D

Ask The Acupuncturist – Staying Healthy During Cold and Flu Season
Written by Ryan Powell, LAc. at Life Chiropractic

Fall brings us an opportunity to slow down a little, and reflect upon the year we are living. Traditionally, it is a good time for letting go of habits and patterns that may no longer be serving us. In the natural world, plants are releasing their leaves and seeds in preparation for next year’s growing cycle. At the same time, Fall is also a good time to keep something beneficial for yourself. This can be a simple as reserving 20 minutes a day for meditation, prayer, or a walk around the neighborhood. Nature reflects this idea as energies turn inwards. Plants put most of their energy into their roots during the fall and winter months, and animals put on a few extra pounds, and prepare to rest.

Along with the opportunities to grow and develop come unique challenges. The body must begin producing more of its own warmth, as there is not as much in the ambient atmosphere. This makes us more prone to catching colds and flu. While it is normal to get “sick” once a year or so, it is problematic when an illness lasts longer than it should, or will not go away completely. I want to offer some sound suggestions on what to do should you start to feel like you are coming down with something.

1. If you are feeling chilled, stay warm. Take a hot shower or bath, and try to break a light sweat. After you have begun to sweat just a little bit, stay covered up, and once again, stay warm.

2. Use your probiotic (acidophilus and other beneficial gut bacteria). Good bacteria is competition for bad bacteria. A properly working digestive system is essential for immune function.

3. Avoid sugars, refined carbohydrates, and dairy. All of these food will feed an acute infection, and suppress your immune system!

4. Get plenty of clear fluids. When the body is fighting infection, your temperature goes up, and you require more water.

5. Good products to use for a few days to stimulate your immune system can be helpful also. Here are some that I like.
-X-Viromin by Apex Energetics (We carry this line at Life Chiropractic)
-For Sore Throat: Yin Qiao (A Classic Chinese Herbal Formula)
-More Severe Cold/Flu with Fever: Cold Quell by Blue Poppy
-Andrographis is an excellent stand alone herb to use when you are sick.

*Note: Traditionally, the herb astragalus, or huang qi is avoided during the early stages of an illness.

6. See your health provider! Traditional medicine is excellent at helping people fight colds and flu. Custom herbal formulas can be made for you.

Call our office today to schedule a free consultation, 303-678-1979.

Hypothyroid-Hashimoto’s and Iodine
written by Kimberly LeBrun, LAc. at Life Chiropractic

Here are the statistics in the US
Hypothyroid – 1.75 million
Hyperthyroid – 275,000
Goiter – 22 million
Thyroid Cancer- 15,000
Death due to thyroid cancer – 2,000

99% of nodules are non-cancerous
24:1 females to males
**** 90% hypothyroid have Hashimoto’s AND don’t know it.
#1 reason is autoimmune disease
It is unlikely that the thyroid gland is the only tissue under attack. Physician’s can’t diagnose autoimmune disease in the current western model until it has already attacked the thyroid, cartilage=arthritis, islet cells=diabetes etc. Patients take more medications for their thyroid because the immune system continues to attack the thyroid.

The question is why is this happening? It’s because MD’s aren’t running full panels on the thyroid because it doesn’t change the course of treatment. Patients will still continue on Synthroid and Armour and just increase doses as time goes on. It doesn’t change the course of treatment because doctors are not addressing their autoimmunity issues. Doctors test TSH and T4 levels on a regular exam but, leave out T3 uptake, total T4, total T3, reverse T3 and TAA/TPO antibodies. The antibodies is the big one with autoimmune Hashimotos but, not always..it can be a combination to detect.

There is a lot of undiagnosed Hashimoto’s in the US. When I first learned of this and started testing patients, I found that 1/3 of my patients had Hashimoto’s and didn’t know it. That is huge out of approximately 40 patients a week. Once I began treating them appropriately, their symptoms and labs improved.

An interesting Patient of mine: A male in his second year of college-never went through puberty. His diagnosis was Chrons’s disease and he was never able to gain weight to go through puberty. I took him on as a patient from another practitioner of Chinese medicine. Upon his intake that wasn’t revealed before, his father had thyroid cancer and his brother had his thyroid removed. Wow!! Doctor’s/specialists have been testing him for everything under the sun and never asked this question!!! Well, the thyroid gland does produce testosterone! So, I gave him the full panel and sure enough his results showed his immune system attacking his thyroid! Hashimotos!! Like I said previously, if a person has any autoimmune issues-what other tissues are under attack? I put him on supplements and herbs and after not seeing him for his summer vacation, he grew almost 2 inches and his voice was deeper. His labs showed improvement but, not what I needed rapidly. His growth plates are still open surprisingly and now I needed to refer him to a specialist for bio-identical hormones to fix his testosterone levels. I’m in hopes that his autoimmune Hashimoto’s is under control from me suppressing it and hope that the bio-identical hormones can get him through puberty before his growth plates close!

Although adequate iodine consumption is important for the thyroid hormone production and iodine deficiency being the most common cause of hypothyroidism worldwide, its supplemental use in autoimmune Hashimoto’s is contraindicated. Iodine is the major cofactor and stimulator for thyroid peroxidase(TPO). TPO is the enzyme that is under attack with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Increased iodine intake increases the immune attack on the thyroid. This can lead to a hyper function autoimmune response destroying the thyroid further.

Speaking of the thyroid gland there are supplements one can take to help with its function. Many people with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis are iodine deficient. However someone with Hashimoto’s SHOULD NOT take iodine until both the immune system component and adrenals are addressed. If taken right off the bat iodine can cause more harm than good and this is one reason why many healthcare professionals will tell someone with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis to avoid iodine altogether. So iodine can be essential to take for a person who has a deficiency but the timing is extremely important with regards to Hashimoto’s.

TMJ, which affects over 10 million people, is a dysfunctional disorder of the jaw, impacting the muscles, nerves and blood vessels. This can also impact the upper neck and tension throughout the neck and shoulders.

Symptoms associated with TMJ disorders may be:

Biting or chewing difficulty or discomfort

Clicking, popping, or grating sound when opening or closing the mouth

Dull, aching pain in the face

Earache (particularly in the morning)

Headache (particularly in the morning)

Hearing loss

Migraine (particularly in the morning)

Jaw pain or tenderness of the jaw

Reduced ability to open or close the mouth

Tinnitus

Neck and shoulder pain

Dizziness

One of the major causes of these symptoms is grinding or clenching the teeth, especially at night. Most people agree that when they are under direct forms of stress they clench their jaw (deadlines for work, staying up late into the night, drinking caffeine or other stimulants, to name a few). Each one of these stimulates a portion of your nervous system called your SYMPATHETIC system, which regulates a stress response (increases blood pressure, dilates pupils in the eye, sensitivity to light, increased heart rate). In rare occasions these stressors are dealt with efficiently in the body to help us through a particularly stressful event (natural disaster, fighting off an attacker, jumping into the pool to save your child).

The balance system in our body is called the PARASYMPATHETIC system. This system exists in the head, neck, low back and pelvis. In constant stress states the parasympathetic system begins to malfunction causing unconscious jaw tension, eye fatigue and swallowing dysfunction. Also sexual dysfunction, neck and low back pain arise from unknown reasons. Digestive dysfunction can not happen properly in constant states of stress, leading to mal-absorption, acid reflux, colitis, diverticulitis, and even cancer.

TMJ is a major problem affecting millions of people. Our society’s current lifestyle is one of constant change and growth. You may unconsciously be falling victim to your current circumstances.

At Life Chiropractic we take a multi-level approach toward resolving your TMJ. Not only do we look at the mechanical function of the jaw bones and the adjacent cranial bones which are corrected with safe, effective chiropractic adjustments. But we also check the jaw muscles for muscular adhesions. At which time we check the dysfunction of these muscles for stress patterns, biochemical deficiencies, or toxic overload. We treat four different causes to your problems all in one place.

We also offer Acupuncture treatments to assist in balancing your body’s internal electrical system and Massage therapy to remove adhesions in the muscular system. At Life Chiropractic and Wellness all of our treatments are meant to rejuvenate your mind body and spirit to better deal with the stress demands of today.
